Does My Bottom Look Big in This?
Whether it is a wife asking the above question or if it is someone else asking any number of questions like, do you like my new shirt, what do you think of my new hair cut, or someone glancing at their watch and wondering how long their other half is going to take to get ready, then it all points to an obsession with self. Ever noticed what you do when someone shows you a photo? Without fail I look for ME.
Recently I have really noticed how I transfix on my sin, the things I do wrong. I have been a Christian for about 8 years and honestly this is an area that has probably increased. You might be thinking what is wrong with focusing on our sin, didn’t Jesus say if your left eye causes you to sin then gauge it out (Matthew 5:29), surely he took sin seriously? I agree with you, he did and we must, however his gauging out tool was not introspection but the gospel. What will cause us to stop sinning is not flagellation and whipping, Jesus has done that for us, but it will be the accepting of the truth that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. It is the gazing at this truth and not ourselves in the mirror that will cause lasting change. So my friend in Christ, yes you have turned away from God, yes you have mucked up and failed by breaking God’s perfect law, but God loves you and died to take you back, to pave the way back to himself, not because we are great but because he is. Not do we look big in this, but does God look big and great and kind and loving. Look in that perfect law of the gospel, gaze intently and soak in his goodness.
