Instead of looking at the fashions, walk out into the fields and look at the wildflowers. They never primp or shop, but have you ever seen color and design quite like it? The ten best–dressed men and women in the country look shabby alongside them.
“If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers––most of which are never even seen––don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God–reality, God–initiative, God–provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.
” Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes (Matt 6:25-34)
It struck me afresh today as I received a bunch of flowers from a neighbour just how magnificently dressed flowers are. A casual admiration of my neighbours flowers in the front garden gained me an invite to tea and a look deeper into the back garden where there was a treasure trove of delight. I was stunned by the colours, the amount, the beauty of every flower. The roses simply looked ‘too good’, almost too perfect like someone had sat down and stitched every petal in place. That even before the petals might have been stitched that each one may have been pressed and heated to perfectly form every crease that waved through not just one but every petal. That each one as it unfolded displayed a new story unique to this moment and to this garden, that was just the visual the aroma was yet to come. Could each one have been sprayed with a master perfumer masterfully picking the scent to match each flower? How long had it all taken? If I had seen this on a catwalk or on some of those glossy magazines I would have been stunned at the designers ability and flare.
Yet everyone was designed, everyone was painstakingly created and attended to by a wonderful designer, ones who’s aroma permeated every unfolding flower in that garden.
If Jesus has painstakingly designed each one of those simply to last for those few short weeks of spring and summer then how much more was he going to take care of us? As Gods unfolding design of redemption unfolds through history till the greatest flower of all time is nailed to a tree to die we catch an aroma of love and design woven into every fabric of the world around us. Oh Jesus let us see you, let us pause to look, to inhale the sweet fragrance of your love, to gaze upon the divine majesty of your splendour that never fades, never loses a petal. You are truly beautiful.
