Where can I find Pleasure, Real Deep Pleasure?
Underneath everything and I mean everything is the pursuit of joy and pleasure. Nothing we do in life is done without that motivation, think about it. The person who bugrdingly accepts a Christmas drinks invite does so because underneath he thinks there is more pleasure in keeping people happy than saying no to people. Or take the person who takes his wife’s pink umbrella to work he thinks there is more pleasure in being laughed at than in being wet at work all day!
On a deeper level, our pursuit of a life partner or the ideal job is a pursuit for the place where we will be most happy. Even the man who is locked up for 27 years and endures is pursuing a greater joy in doing so. The battle in life is where is the most joy.
The Christian battle is the very same, it is the battle that says is there more pleasure in the world, is there more pleasure in following God and living for his world? The battle as a Christian when it comes to sin therefore is ultimately a battle for pleasure, think about it practically. When you are faced with an option to sin what does your heart say to you? Does it not say take this thing because it is going to give you more pleasure?
Since the beginning of time man has doubted God’s goodness, doubted that he is really for us and questioned where we find the most pleasure. God says however come to me, the fountain of living water, the one who made you to have your desires and pleasures met in him, we are too busy mucking around with second hand pleasures when there are infinitely more pleasures in God.
As John Piper would say, God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him. He want us satisfied and full of joy, he wants us to know he is our ultimate treasure! He is that good, he is that for us! ENJOY HIM!
Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. – Psalm 90:14
